About

On this walking tour we will step back into the world of medieval and Tudor York – a city alive with craftsmen, merchants, churchmen…and the spectacular tradition of the York Mystery Plays. This cycle of around fifty short dramas – one of the great civic events of the year - told the entire sweep of biblical history, from Creation to Doomsday. The plays were staged on pageant wagons in the streets of York and this tour will follow the original route that the wagons took. On the way, we will highlight the stopping places where the plays were performed and point out many buildings from that time that have survived to this day, as well as some of the changes. Attendees will get a feel for medieval and Tudor York during the time of the Mystery Plays and see the streets and buildings that once formed the backdrop for these dramas.

The tours will start at Holy Trinity church on Micklegate and finish near to the church of All Saints Pavement, in the centre of York. The total distance is just over one mile and the walks will last approximately one and a half hours. The route is entirely on streets/pavements but attendees should wear footwear appropriate for the weather and the length of walk. The route is mostly level and there are no steps.

Adults £8. Children under 13 £5
