Barley Hall
About Us
Barley Hall is a picturesque medieval townhouse tucked away down one of the oldest streets in York. Once home to the Priors of Nostell and a Lord Mayor of York, Barley Hall has now been lovingly restored to its original splendour with stunning high ceilings, beautiful exposed timber frames, and possibly the only horn window in England. Visitors to Barley Hall can make themselves at home, sit on the chairs and experience what it would have been like to live in medieval England.
Pre-booking online, or by calling 01904 615505, is advisable.
Beasts at Barley Hall
Our newest exhibition, Beasts at Barley Hall, tells the stories of animals in medieval life, from domestic pets (and pests) and livestock to lions, bears and even dragons, using artefacts found in and around the city of York. Hands-on activities for children, new accessible interpretation boards, audio stories and much more make Beasts At Barley Hall a must-see if you are in York this summer!
Barley Hall Coffee Shop
Continue your historic exploration of York with a relaxing hot drink in Barley Hall Coffee Shop. More than a café, immerse yourself in the history of our newest venue, once home to Thomas Gent’s printing shop and an 18th-Century coffee house. Perfect for refreshment indoors, or al fresco in the aptly-named Coffee Yard.
Please note that Barley Hall is a historic building and features uneven floors, narrow stairs and steps between rooms. Facilities such as accessible toilets and a lift are unavailable due to the nature of the building. Please call 01904 615505 to discuss your access requirements or visit our website.
