About

Step inside the UK’s oldest living convent to explore Treasures of the Bar Convent, a powerful new permanent exhibition revealing sacred artefacts kept safe through centuries of secrecy and persecution.

The Bar Convent, as the only Catholic house in England after Henry VIII closed all the religious houses, became a refuge for rare and significant objects. Some designed to be hidden or disguised, others passed down in secret through generations of Catholic families, now, many of these items are on display to the public for the first time.

From exquisite silverware and vestments donated by prominent Catholic families to simple devotional items rich in personal and spiritual history, each object tells a remarkable story of resilience, community and unwavering faith. Central to the exhibition is The Bar Convent Arma Christi, a rare medieval scroll, one of the best preserved examples ever found.

Join us to witness these rare survivors of history which offer a moving glimpse into the lives of those who risked everything to keep their faith alive.

Open Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm (last admission 4pm). Closed Sundays.
