About Us
Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print works to secure the future of traditional printing, not just preserving the past but bringing it to life. This superbly-equipped pressroom, museum and gallery is located in the tranquil garden of St Anthony’s Hall in the heart of York, overlooked by the city walls.
Anyone can visit to explore the shop and gallery or take a free tour. People join as members to use the studio. Workshops, away days and bespoke tuition are offered for complete beginners to advanced printers.
Studio, Selling Gallery & Shop
Thin Ice Press charts the history of print, from an 1845 Crown Columbian press to powered proofing presses, and is home to 115 cases of wood type and 100 cases of metal type. It hosts lively Risograph and linocut printing clubs and has created a new home for key elements of the DeLittle of York collection, the last and most successful wood letter manufacturers in the UK.
The team are passionate about research offering support for small to medium creative enterprises to get hands-on with print and opportunities for filming historic equipment in a beautiful setting.
Visit the selling gallery and shop to discover framed prints by artists specialising in relief printmaking techniques; a range of posters, cards, and notebooks; or get inspired and pick up a gift card for you or a loved one to attend a workshop.
Workshops & Memberships
Workshops at Thin Ice Press cater to all ages and abilities, offering the chance to learn new skills or develop your creative practice in letterpress, linocut printing, bookbinding, risograph, and more. Workshops range from one-hour experiences to six-week courses.
