About Us

7 Monk Bar Court is a charming little house, perfectly tucked away within York’s historic City Walls. Hidden down a peaceful lane that backs directly onto the walls themselves, it offers a wonderfully quiet retreat while being just a short stroll from the Minster and everything the city centre has to offer.

Following directions from York Train Station may feel like a guided tour through the city’s rich history, but the reward is a truly tranquil setting. Because the house sits discreetly along a small historic lane, you can enjoy a restful and undisturbed night’s sleep despite being right in the heart of York.

The space

Located on Monk Bar Court, a narrow lane leading off Goodramgate, this little street was once known as Elbow Lane. In 1575, householders were required to keep the road outside their properties clean and free from dust, dirt, rubbish and animal droppings. These “sweepings” were taken to the nearest midden, which for residents of Monk Ward at the time was in a garden on Elbow Lane owned by Thomas Barker. Thankfully, today you can enjoy the peace and charm of this tucked-away spot without any fear of historic sweepings appearing in your yard!

Guest access

The property features a welcoming open-plan living room that flows into a well-equipped kitchen and dining area, complete with all the modern comforts you might need, including WiFi.

Upstairs, you’ll find a surprisingly spacious double bedroom with generous storage, along with a beautifully finished shower room that feels both stylish and luxurious.

One of the home’s hidden gems is the small rear courtyard, which opens directly onto the historic City Walls, a truly special and unexpected feature.

Other things to note

A quick tip when navigating York: in local terminology, “gate” means street, so Goodramgate is a street, while “bar” means gate, so Monk Bar is one of the historic gateways through the City Walls.
