About

The York Gradual contains the complete music for the pre-Reformation Mass in the north of England. Hand-written on parchment over 600 years ago, only one copy survives in a small Nottinghamshire parish - our only source for how the music in the parishes of northern England would have sounded in the pre-Reformation period. This work has now been published for the first time, thanks to the meticulous reproduction of the original by Father Andrew Horsman. In this talk, Father Andrew explains the historical context of the York Gradual and talks us through the process of its recovery, introducing us to the soundscape of the medieval Mass in the beautiful historic setting of All Saints North Street. A must for anyone interested in church history and / or early music!

Booking for this event is not required and attendance is free, though we suggest a donation of £5 to help us cover costs. Donations can be made by cash and card within the church.
