York Against Cancer
About Us
York Against Cancer has been raising money for local cancer care, research and education for more than 30 years. We launched Yorkshire’s first mobile chemotherapy unit, an award-winning initiative that brings treatment closer to home for rural patients while ensuring capacity at York and Scarborough Hospitals. We have a beautiful seaside respite property giving FREE short breaks to hundreds of cancer patients being treated by the York hospital trust. Our minibus runs Monday to Friday, taking patients from York and around for radiotherapy at St James’s Hospital, Leeds. We established the University of York’s Jack Birch Unit, which conducts internationally recognised research into cancer, which we continue to support through a five-year, million-pound-plus programme.
Thousands of reception-age children in local schools receive free sunhats as part of our skin cancer awareness programme. We also fund a lifesaving project through which GPs are using advanced photographic equipment to detect possible skin cancers more quickly and efficiently. Our education programme includes specially devised lessons to help teachers get cancer awareness messages across to children in primary and secondary school. Over the past three decades, thanks to our loyal local support, we have raised more than £15 million. For more information about our work, visit our website.
