York Against Cancer
About Us
York Against Cancer is a local charity helping local people affected by cancer. Established in 1987 by three colleagues, Professor Steve Leveson, Professor Colin Garner and Mr John Craven, York Against Cancer was created to provide practical help and support for cancer patients and their families in York, North Yorkshire & East Yorkshire, and fund pioneering cancer research being carried out in the local area. Over the past 38 years, we have raised more than £20million for the charity, which has funded a range of support services including a free minibus that takes people from York to St. James’s Hospital in Leeds for radiotherapy appointments, free short breaks in our two luxury respite properties to help people recuperate from cancer treatment, free, tailored exercise classes for cancer patients and The Leveson Centre, our cancer support centre which is available for anyone affected by cancer to pop in and have a cuppa and make use of our holistic services and activities. We are proud to have funded a range of medical innovations, such as Yorkshire’s first Mobile Chemotherapy Unit and York Hospital’s surgical robot, and pioneering research at the Jack Birch Unit at the University of York, which has been internationally recognised for its groundbreaking research into bladder cancer. As a charity, we continue to grow and develop our services all thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts and donations we receive from individuals, groups, schools, organisations and businesses. Our aims today are the same as they were when the charity was founded - to support as many people affected by cancer as possible.
