About

In the last days of October and the first of November, the veil between this world and the Otherworld grows thin. The ancient Celts called it Samhain. Ragnell Hagathorn, York's own Hedge Witch, simply calls it her favourite time of year!

This Halloween weekend, the three-thousand-year-old Storyteller summons thee to walk the haunted snickleways of York as twilight falls. Hear her Twilight Tales of restless spirits, wicked witches and monsters most foul. Will ye glimpse the dreaded Barghest, Hound of the Underworld? What did Old Mother Shipton foresee? All spun with wit, wonder and a pinch of Witchy Wisdom!

Light and dark, funny and fearsome, but always ending well. So gather thy coven and book thy passage before the spirits claim every place!

Frequently asked questions

What happens on the Witch Walk?

Ragnell leads her Witchwalkers into a hidden York, the Underworld of the past, where older cities lie deep beneath the city we see - the Mediaeval City, the Viking City, the Roman City - and beneath it all the ancient Pagan enclosures of the Celts where Druids and Witches wove their magics! Here the People of the Past (that mortals call ghosts) still linger! Ragnell tells the Old Tales not merely as stories passed down second or third-hand but first-hand as she saw them unfold - or directly from those she has known across the ages! These are the haunted chronicles of ancient York - its ghosts, witches and monsters - centuries of ghosts and gossip, witchery and history as she remembers living it!

Is this tour about witches or witchcraft?

Witches and Witchcraft together form one strand, one thread, in the tapestry - one theme in the folkloric, storytelling symphony that is Ragnell's Witch Walk. It is a Witch Walk primarily because it is led by a Witch - one of the Old Witches, who came to this world from the Otherworld, long ago! It is also a Ghost Walk - for the greatest Ghost Tales of the city are also told - woven in with details of a history that she herself has lived through.

How long does the walk last?

The Walk runs for around 90 minutes at a gentle walking pace suitable for most visitors. It takes a route accessible to wheelchairs, with occasional 'uneven access', due to the nature of York's historical streets. The size of the group and audience interaction (Ragnell is always happy to converse and answer questions) can extend the duration. Private and small bookings can also be shortened where desirable.

Where does the walk start?

Ragnell and her Witchwalkers gather at St Helen's Square, York, YO1 8QP.

Is the walk suitable for children?

The walk is recommended for mature audiences but children with a good attention span and an active imagination, who enjoy storytelling, have greatly enjoyed adventuring with the Witch. There are occasional jump scares and themes of ghosts and death. So some parents may need their children to hold their hands!
Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and parents should use their discretion on suitability for younger children. And on the suitability of their children for the group experience.

Is it actually scary?

There is theatrical fright woven together with some dark storytelling. Ragnell doesn't shy away from darkness (or sadness) in her tales. But the darkness is balanced with light, humour and warmth throughout. Ragnell likes a laugh as much as a scare, comedy as much as tragedy. On Ragnell's Witch Walk fun and fear walk hand in hand!

What should Witchwalkers wear or bring?

Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. The walk takes place outdoors on foot, on York's historic (occasionally uneven) streets.

Does the walk go ahead whatever the weather?

The walk runs rain or shine! Mortals really need to toughen up! Ragnell has survived the Deserts of Desolation and the Stormtides of the Seven Isles. Her first Teacher was a Tempestri - a Weather Witch! She has seen far worse than a sweaty British Summer or a cold, drizzly Yorkshire night! Dress wisely. You bake or freeze by your own folly!

Is the walk accessible?

The walk follows an accessible route with some 'uneven access': wheelchair users and other disabled visitors have found the walk accessible and the pace manageable. Do get in touch before booking if accessibility is a concern, so Ragnell can advise on the route and tailor the walk to your needs if necessary.

How do I book tickets?

Tickets are available online, currently priced at £15 for adults and £7.50 for children and concessions. Booking in advance is recommended, as walks can sell out.

Can I bring a dog or a pushchair?

Given the route and evening timing, the walk isn't recommended for pushchairs. Assistance dogs are welcome; for other dogs, get in touch first.
