About

Join Castle Howard for a series of informal evening talks about nature and landscapes, every third Tuesday of the month in the Courtyard Café.

Virginia Mackie has been working alongside the Castle Howard forestry team to re-establish coppicing stools in an area of semi-ancient woodland on the estate. Coppicing is a traditional woodland management technique where tree stumps of recently felled trees are formed into ‘stools’ where new shoots will grow and cut as poles in future years. This session will begin at the Stable Courtyard where we will travel by tractor trailer to Shaw wood to meet with Virginia and Duncan Leckie (CH Forestry Manager) to visit the coppicing area and to learn more about the value of this practice.

Our Future Landscape talks explore how we see, interact with, and manage our unique local landscapes, with a presentation by a guest speaker followed by an open Q&A.

The discussions will cover how we need to manage and prepare our landscapes to respond to climate change, protect biodiversity and create more space for nature. The Castle Howard landscapes produce food, fibre, and fuel, create opportunities to preserve knowledge and skills, and provide a playground for leisure, wellbeing, and exercise. This rolling series of talks will include a diverse range of speakers working in the field to ensure our collective landscapes are fit for future.

These events are free to attend, but we kindly ask you to book a ticket to reserve your place. Tickets are limited and available on a first come first served basis. Light refreshments will be available during the evening.
