About Us

Awarded Sustainable Pub of the Year in the Gastro Pub Awards 2025 and Best Sunday Roast in the U.K by The Good Food Guide in 2024.

The Abbey Inn is a nineteenth century, historic inn transformed into a cosy, relaxed country pub with bedrooms, overlooking the historic ruins of Byland Abbey in North Yorkshire. Serving a seasonal menu created by Chef Director Tommy Banks, alongside an excellently curated drinks list from real hand-pumped local ales to seasonal cocktails.

There's evolving, seasonal menus that champion classic, British food, with an added unique Oldstead style. Whether you’re enjoying a pint and some bar snacks next to the fire, or experiencing our full menu or children's menu, there’s something for everyone!

Stay at The Abbey Inn, in one of our first floor rooms, with a view of the magnificent ruins of Byland Abbey. Rooms have king sized beds and separate shower and bath. Hair dyer and iron & ironing board come as standard. Please note there is no lift access to the bedrooms. Stay overnight in our wonderful rooms a stones throw away from the ruins of Byland Abbey. Breakfast will be served at our sister restaurant, one mile way, The Black Swan Oldstead. Please note that The Abbey Inn restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays - you can choose to dine at The Black Swan, our Michelin-Starred sister restaurant

The Abbey Inn is open for food Thursday - Monday. Guests staying on a Tuesday or Wednesday are welcome to dine at our sister restaurant The Black Swan Oldstead.
