There's 'Moor' to York Than City Life

York is famous for historic streets, world-class attractions and a vibrant food scene, but there’s even more to discover just beyond the city walls. Using York as your base, you can easily explore the breath-taking landscapes of the North York Moors National Park, where changing seasons bring fresh colour, wildlife and unforgettable outdoor experiences.

We’ve been working with brilliant North Yorkshire content creators to showcase different ways to experience York and the North York Moors. Trought and About’s city and coast itinerary shows just how easy it is to combine York’s vibrant city life with the restorative beauty of the North York Moors National Park coastline.

Day One: City Experiences in York

Tom and Essi began their trip in the heart of York with a gin-making masterclass at York Gin. Under the careful guidance of the York Gin team, they learnt more about the craft behind the spirit before creating their very own bottle to take away.

It was the perfect way to start a weekend in the city: hands-on, memorable and full of character. After gin school, they continued their cultural city escape at York Art Gallery.

Their visit to the Making Waves exhibition brought together sea, coast and Japanese woodblock prints, setting the tone beautifully for the next part of their journey. With coastal scenes firmly in mind, it was time to leave the city behind and head towards the North York Moors coast.

Day Two: Slow Coastal Moments on the North York Moors Coast

One of the joys of staying in York is how easy it is to combine the energy of the city with the calm of the coast. After a day of creative and cultural experiences, Tom and Essi made their way from York to Sandsend, a beautiful seaside village on the North Yorkshire coast.

They started with a peaceful walk along Sandsend beach, taking in the sea air and the open views. With parking close to the beach, it made for an easy and relaxed start to the day.

From there, they continued along the coast, visiting Whitby and Staithes for photo stops, gentle wandering and time to soak up the atmosphere. Rather than rushing from place to place, their second day was all about slowing down, enjoying the views and making time for simple moments by the sea.

Plan Your Own York and Coast Escape

Tom and Essi’s two-day trip is a brilliant reminder that there’s more to York than city life. Start with independent food, creative experiences and cultural highlights in the city, then pair it with windswept beaches, coastal villages and peaceful views along the North York Moors coast.

Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend, a cosy winter break or a relaxed UK escape, York makes the perfect base for a trip that blends city discovery with coastal calm.
