Promotional blog provided by DIG: An Archaeological Adventure
DIG is one of a kind...
“One of the best family days out. No other experience gets you as close to the excitement of archaeological discovery.” – Dan Snow
DIG is a hands-on archaeology-themed visitor attraction created by the people behind JORVIK Viking Centre. Kids can grab a trowel and discover only the most exciting archaeological artefacts from the 2000 years of history hidden under the streets of York in synthetic (mess-free!) soil. There are four excavation pits (filled with Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian artefacts) for kids to dig, shake, see, feel and find.
There's also an interactive talk led by a friendly archaeologist- a great opportunity for kids to get stuck in and ask any burning questions they might have about history. Real artefacts are passed around (including a fossilised poo!) that kids can feel, take a closer look at and ask any more questions.
After that, there's time to explore the exhibition and see what wildlife you can spot in the DIG garden.
Do you know a little Viking with a birthday soon?
Become a Viking with a party for the history books at DIG! Your dedicated Viking host will lead the way through synthetic archaeological trenches, helping kids unearth fascinating artefacts from 2000 years of York's history. Next up is a fun shield-making activity, where kids can get creative; now it’s time to tuck into a delicious party feast before everyone becomes a real Viking and faces each other in battle. Practice your battle cry!
Enquire about a birthday party at DIG by contacting them via email (birthdays@yorkat.co.uk) or over the phone (01904615505) or find out more on their website.
Don't worry, there's something for adults too!
DIG Deeper: An Archaeological Adventure for adults is back after the summer holidays! During the last time slot of every day, adults can grab a trowel and brush to uncover real finds in synthetic pits, handle replica artefacts and chat to friendly archaeologists about life in the trenches. DIG Deeper runs in term time only, so make sure you visit before October half term.
Last chance to see Ancient Dust Busters
DIG’s family-friendly exhibition - Ancient Dust Busters
- will be open until 15th October. At this exhibition, you can find out more about the connection between pollution and archaeology and learn more about how people lived and what they ate by what they had stuck in their teeth! So, head over to DIG this Autumn for your last chance to explore Ancient Dust Busters.
DIG After Dark: Ghosts in the Graveyard
A spooktacular Halloween event is coming to DIG this Halloween as part of York Ghost Week - expect to huddle around the campfire and listen to ghost stories in the DIG garden.
DIG is housed in St Saviour’s Church which has stood on site since the 11th century and became a popular place to worship, before falling into decline at the turn of the 20th century.
Come along to these interactive and immersive storytelling sessions to hear the tragic tales of the ghost of a Viking warrior and even the ghost hunter who yearned to witness him! Plus, you can discover more about folklore, ghost stories and the history of St Saviour’s Church.
Kids can have fun cosying around the campfire with snacks and a hot drink, all included in the price. You'll also get access to an exciting new exhibition coming to DIG on 21st October.
Tickets for this event must be pre-booked online.
