In line with national government policy on COVID-19, we strongly advise visitors not to travel to York or the surrounding area.

Until you can visit again, we are committed to keeping you entertained and inspired to return, when safe to do so.

York and North Yorkshire’s diverse landscapes and natural beauty have attracted artists for hundreds of years, but more recently it has fascinated film and TV makers, which is great news if you want to get your York fix while you remain at home.

The city has recently taken centre stage in the hit BBC drama Gentleman Jack, which is currently available on BBC iPlayer.

Gentleman Jack follows one of the most iconic women of the 19th century – Anne Lister – who wrote diaries detailing her, at that time taboo, lesbian relationships and the restulting dealings with members of high society.

She is seen as a trailblazer, marrying a woman and living openly as a lesbian, during a time when homosexuality was considered a sin and shunned by society. Nicknamed Gentleman Jack, due to her participation in traditionally ‘masculine’ activities, the drama explores Anne’s fascinating life, including her love affair and marriage to Ann Walker, and multiple business ventures.

Take a look at the filming locations, below, and when you spot York’s landmarks while watching Gentleman Jack let us know by tagging @VisitYork and using #OnlyInYork.
