About

This weekend it's all about you, the residents of York! York Minster’s brand-new exhibition ‘St William of York: Life and Legacy’ opens for Residents’ Festival.

William Fitzherbert was twice Archbishop of York during the 12th century. One day, he became ill after celebrating Mass where one of his enemies is rumoured to have murdered him by poisoning his communion chalice.

Following his death, many miracles were reported around his shrine in York Minster. In 1226, 800 years ago this year, William was canonised and became the Patron Saint of York.

Discover more about your patron saint, Saint William of York. How did he save hundreds of people from drowning when the Ouse Bridge Collapsed? Why was his tomb disinterred and reburied in secret along Precentor's Court?

The exhibition will be open during sightseeing times over the weekend. Entry is free for York Residents with valid proof of address. No pre-booking is required.
