About
This poetic drama by Ukrainian writer Lesya Ukrainka is brought to life on stage by DSpace Theatre. The production not only reveals the depth of the Ukrainian soul but also highlights universal themes - love, freedom, choice, and loss - that resonate with everyone.
Set in an ancient forest during the early spring, the story unfolds with the awakening of nature and the stirring of deep human and mythological emotions. Mavka, a forest nymph, awakens from her winter sleep to the sound of a flute played by Lukash, a young man who arrives to build a home by the lake. Their love blossoms in defiance of warnings from forest spirits and Lukash’s controlling mother, who wishes to marry him to another woman.
