Anniversary of St William of York

In a new exhibition, York Minster are celebrating the 800th anniversary of the canonisation St William of York. Included in your ticket, learn about this fascinating history and see precious artefacts before visiting the Crypt to see St William’s tomb.

Visitors are invited to watch a short film in the Undercroft Museum, which draws the story together including 3D laser scanning technology to present surviving fragments of his nave shrine.

The Nave

The widest Gothic Nave in England, this beautiful interior is a place of stillness and inspiration. Take in the stunning medieval features and find something new each time you visit.

The Chapter House

The Chapter House is a stunning octagonal space, complete with a magnificent ceiling and carvings. The room was once used for the location of Parliament for Kind Edward I and dates back to the 1280s.

Crypt

Visit the tomb of the Patron Saint of York, St William, in the Crypt deep underneath the Quire. The oldest section of the Minster, take the opportunity to discover the famous Doomstone in this ancient space.

The Great East Window

Part of a huge restoration project, this 600 year old window is now fully restored. Telling the story of the beginning and end of all things, it is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the country.

Quire

The Quire is where most sung services are held in the Minster, built between 1361 and the 1420s. The space includes The Grand Organ and the throne for the Archbishop of York.

The Rose Window

The famous Rose Window was badly damaged in the 1984 fire but has been restored to its original beauty. One of the most stunning parts of the Minster, this beautiful feature is a must-see.

Undercroft Museum

Walk through 2,000 years of history and discover artefacts and interactive digital displays that will leave you educated and inspired. Find the museum in the chambers beneath the Minster, the only accredited museum in a cathedral in the country.

Tower Challenge

Did you know you can explore further and climb to the top of the Minster? Take on the challenge up the 275 steps, leading you up to the highest point in the city, with spectacular views of York waiting for you at the top. We reward those who take on the challenge with a Tower Champion pin badge. Tower Trips can be booked on the day of your visit inside the Minster.
