Looking for a trainspotting fix? York is the home of railway heritage and the city has been at the forefront of the development of the railway in the UK for centuries. The city has been home to prominent figures including George Hudson, the ‘Railway King’ and now is the location of the National Railway Museum which houses some of the greatest trains in history including Mallard, Duchess of Hamilton and George Stephenson’s Rocket.

First stop - the National Railway Museum. Explore the three giant halls full of trains and railway legends. Here you will find all the classics from Mallard, the world's fastest steam locomotive, to Queen Victoria's Royal Carriages and modern day examples such as Eurostar and the world famous "Shinkansen" Japanese Bullet train.

Take afternoon tea on board the Countess of York, a truly decadent experience.

For a glorious trip back in time, step aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Pickering and travel by steam train via Goathland, Grosmont or even up to Whitby. Enjoy stunning scenery as you journey through 18 miles of North York Moors National Park, calling at picturesque stations on the way.
