Enjoy an inspiring programme of in-person and online events at York Festival of Ideas 2024.

Taking place from 1 to 14 June 2024, the mostly FREE events include talks from world-class speakers, exhibitions, performances, guided tours and family-friendly activities. And with topics ranging from animals to art, history to health and politics to psychology, the Festival promises something for all ages and interests.

Headline speakers include double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes; broadcaster, journalist and filmmaker Zeinab Badawi; BBC Security Correspondent Frank Gardner; art historian and broadcaster Janina Ramirez; and journalist and presenter Ashley John-Baptiste.

The programme also features celebrated performers, including violinist and composer Anna Phoebe; actor Sir Simon Russell Beale, who performs in Rêverie, alongside the concert’s creator, pianist Lucy Parham; and children’s author Michael Morpurgo, who presents a magical concert adaptation of his bestselling novel War Horse.

In addition, this year’s Festival offers a diverse range of guided and self-guided walking tours. Explore a magical world built by fairies on the banks of the River Foss, use your smartphone and join an interactive nature tour, or delve into York’s dark past on a self-guided podcast walking tour – plus many more.

Supported by generous sponsors and led by the University of York, York Festival of Ideas is one of the largest free festivals of its kind in the UK.
