About
York Family Fossil Hunt
Did you know you can find fossils hiding on the historic streets of York?
This summer, join palaeontologist Fossiliam (Dr Liam Herringshaw) for the York Family Fossil Hunt, and he'll show you, yes, you can! In this fun, family-friendly event, you'll discover the fossils to be found in the buildings, streets and gardens of historic York. You'll learn how to spot the many types of prehistoric plants and animals dotted around the city, and though we can't collect any of them, you'll never be able to walk the streets in the same way!
The York Family Fossil hunt begins outside the Yorkshire Museum in York Museum Gardens. We then head to the gardens' wonderful Pebble Mosaic, where we can walk
across the whole of Yorkshire in a few steps. We'll then search for fossils in Museum Gardens, the city walls, around York Explore Library, and around York Minster, finishing the walk on Chapter House Street, near the Treasurer's House.
The event lasts 60-90 minutes, and is aimed at fossil fans aged 6 and over. The route includes a few steps and some cobbled streets, so is unsuitable for people of restricted mobility, but please get in touch if you have any questions about accessibility. Everyone aged 6 and over needs a paid ticket, and all under-18s must be accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. Under-6s are welcome to come along too - please book them a free ticket so Fossiliam knows to expect them!

Our 'Welcome to York' walks come in two varieties: the Royal Route and the River Route. On the Royal Route we’ll ramble regally through the historic heart of York, meeting imperial Romans, Viking lords, and Kings of England. On the River Route we’ll take a waterside walk through 2000 years of amazing history, telling tales of fights and floods, merchants and monks, queens and castles.
Both walks begin outside the Yorkshire Museum, in York Museum Gardens, and finish by Clifford's Tower, near York Castle Museum. Find out more, and book your tickets, on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/welcome-to-york-walks-4476003
