Bach Cantata ‘Gloria in excelsis Deo’, BWV 191
Bach at Christmas
With its exuberant choruses, colourful orchestration and beautiful solo writing, Bach’s Magnificat captures perfectly the divine joy of a pregnant Mary. Two Christmas cantatas, Unser Mund sei voll Lachens (first performed on Christmas Day in 1725) and Gloria in excelsis Deo, complete this spectacular programme. All of these works use Bach’s festival orchestra comprising trumpets, timpanis, flutes, oboes, strings and continuo alongside soloists and chorus. Cantata BWV 191 is adapted from three celebratory movements of the Gloria from B minor Mass, and the opening movement of Cantata BWV 110 uses the stunning Overture from Bach’s Orchestral Suite BWV 1069. Do not miss this musical feast as Yorkshire Bach Choir and Yorkshire Baroque Soloists join forces for an unmissable trio of festive works!
