York Minster’s general admission tickets include a free guided tour of the cathedral. Throughout the summer months, our expert tour guides will explore the Minster’s rich history, with a special focus on the 1984 fire to commemorate its 40th anniversary.
Visitors can choose from:
YORK MINSTER GUIDED TOURS
Monday to Saturday, 10am – 3pm
Our standard guided tours run Monday to Saturday at regular intervals between 10am and 3pm.
Visitors can discover stories and facts from the cathedral’s 800-year history, including the events leading up to and the aftermath of the 1984 fire.
STAINED GLASS TOURS
Monday to Friday, 11am
Tours exploring the Minster’s vast collection of stained glass run Monday to Friday at 11am.
Visitors can explore our collection of medieval glass and its unique history, including the Rose Window that suffered extensive damage in the 1984 fire.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY DISCOVERY TOURS
Saturdays, 11am
On Saturdays throughout the year, we offer family-friendly discovery tours suitable for children aged 4+.
Families can discover the answers to fun questions including ‘How many blue whales can fit inside the Minster?’ and ‘Which room has a special whispering trick?’, as well as learning more about the roof bosses design by Blue Peter competition winners following the 1984 fire.
Guided tours are included with a general admission ticket, book your timed entry ticket on our website. Tours are subject to availability, please speak to a member of our welcome team on arrival to find out more.

General visiting:
Mon – Sat: 9.30am – 5pm (last admission 4pm)
Sun: 12.45pm – 3.30pm (last admission at 2.30pm).
