You may have heard of Bonfire Night and York’s links to the Gunpowder Plot, but how much do you know about the lives of local Catholics during this time? Discover more about the people linked to the Plot, how it impacted those who weren’t involved and explore the extraordinary lengths that Catholics went to in order to hide their religion from the authorities. Find the clues to uncover the ingenious ways Catholics continued to practice their religion & how this convent remained a secret for 300 years! From hiding holes, disguises & invisible ink, and objects concealed as everyday household items. Complete the trail for a chance to win a £30 voucher for the café.

The Bar Convent Opening Hours

Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm with last admissions at 4pm. Closed on Bank Holidays and some dates over Easter and Christmas - please see our website for details.
