Rosie Wall has dedicated herself to the Chapelfields Community. She chaired the Residents Association for twenty years. She was instrumental in developing the Sanderson Court Community House (Now the Place), and "Crossroads," a safe space for young people, addressing significant anti-social behavior in the area.

She secured funding to improve the estated, creating better, safer and cleaner conditions.

Despite tragically losing her son Daniel and Husband Jeff she continued her tireless community work. She spearheaded the "Hub" at the Community House, providing regular coffee chats and advice sessions. During the 2015 Boxing Day Floods and the Covid lockdowns, Rosie organised support efforts, ensuring the community stayed connected and received necessary aid.

Meet The Artist

Leo Morey is a Cuban painter born in 1995 in the city of Matanzas. He is a graduate of the Fine Art Academy "Diego Querol" of Matanzas. He started producing a series of self portraits bringing up social issues in contemporary Cuba. Leo took part in several exhibitions in his home city as well as he was selected winner of the First Prize at the Annual Exhibition of the Gallery "Pedro Esquerré". He also worked for various private collectors in south Florida during his brief stay in Miami in 2017. In 2018 Leo Morey moved to York UK and 2 years later, influenced by the global pandemic and working in isolation, he commenced the series "Cuba a flor de piel": a more personal collection of paintings inspired by experiences and memories of his home country.

About The Design

Rosie Wall

❝I am a Cuban artist based in York, United Kingdom. My studio practice uses painting as a means towards exploring Cuban identity, using the human figure as a vehicle to connect the public with my culture and heritage.

My artwork is atmospheric, vibrant and colourful as a result of my Hispanic-Caribbean background. The scenes that I paint show the ordinary people in their daily life, emphasizing elements such as body language, facial expression and a vast skin colour diversity.

My work not only embraces the audience with the warm tropical sun and the aroma of the island, but it also addresses the conflicts of Cuban society. It is inspired by the most beloved memories and my sense of belonging. I seek to open a dialogue about the reality of contemporary Cuba from the understanding and intimacy of personal experience.

I find it particularly appealing to contribute my art to the artistic and cultural landscape of the city. I believe that through my personal style and my understanding of color, shadow, light, etc., I can bring a new perspective that adds value and richness to the overall representation of York's artistic community. I am convinced that my cultural heritage and perspective are a small but determined contribution to the commendable task of building a city that embraces and welcomes the best artistic expressions from around the world and blends them with centuries of history and tradition to create a more diverse, inclusive, and plural space in York.❞
