About

15 to 23 February 2025

Blow off the cobwebs and join us for steam rides from Whitby to Grosmont and Goathland this February half-term. Families can also download our FREE February Fun Kid’s Kit (coming soon), full of information and activities to do around Grosmont and Goathland Stations, and on our trains.

As part of our celebrations for the start of Railway 200 we are excited to welcome the beautifully restored diesel-powered North Eastern Railway Electric Autocar No. 3170 courtesy of the NER 1903 Electric Autocar Trust. You can journey on the unique NER Autocar to and from Grosmont and Goathland stations. Goathland station featured as Hogsmeade station in the first Harry Potter film.

Please note: major signalling work is being completed this winter at the south-end of our line and we will only be running services between Whitby, Grosmont and Goathland stations.

A Pioneer Returns to the Tracks

Experience a piece of transport history as this ground-breaking petrol-electric autocar visits the NYMR. Designed in 1903 by Vincent Raven of the North Eastern Railway, these remarkable vehicles were the world’s first to use an internal combustion engine to generate electric power for passenger rail travel. Decades ahead of their time, the autocars featured innovations like electric track brakes and showcased superior acceleration and hill-climbing abilities compared to steam-powered alternatives.

A Trailblazer Restored

The autocar's journey from pioneering invention to a preserved gem is as remarkable as its design. After retirement in the 1930s, the body of autocar No. 3170 was repurposed as a holiday home, here in North Yorkshire, where it was sheltered for decades. Now fully restored and running, this visit celebrates not just its heritage but also its evolution, making real the 1930s vision of a diesel-powered future. Don’t miss the chance to see history in motion!
