About Us
The Dreamery Gardens & Fairy Museum – England’s Lost Fairy Gardens
Just 15 minutes from York, where wonder lives in the woods…
Step into 100 acres of enchanted woodland and uncover England’s long-lost fairy gardens. With over 1.5km of whimsical trails, The Dreamery delights both children and adults with magical discoveries around every corner — from fairy doors and mushroom rings to dragon nests, mermaid lagoons, Elven thrones, and a willow-walled maze. New artefacts are added all the time, as the old woodland continues to reveal its secrets…
This is not a manicured attraction (although the the mythical woodland inhabitants do garden) — it’s an immersive, natural experience that reconnects us to the magic and mystery of the natural world. Whether you visit in spring bloom, autumn lantern season, or winter's icy stillness, there's always something new to discover, with seasonal displays and events year-round.
Explore the UK’s Only Fairy Museum
Housed in the original studio of the eccentric Professor Harvey John Howland — fairy collector, Pre-Raphaelite associate, and founder of the New Society of Arcane and Natural History — the museum features restored fairy garments, crowns, tools, and homes, along with his original journals and illustrations. It’s a breathtaking miniature world that blurs the line between folklore and history.
Eat, Drink & Dream
The Dreamery Kitchen is a rustic woodland café/bar open to all (no trail ticket required). Whether you're after morning coffee or a warming woodland tipple by the fire, you'll find organic, locally sourced food, fairy-inspired drinks, and the friendliest staff this side of the forest.
Parties, Schools & Storytelling
Perfect for birthdays, school groups, and home educators. And don’t miss our magical seasonal events — from candlelit storytelling with Father Christmas and Lady Winter, to lantern-lit forest walks, Ice Fairy February, and the mystical Mermay.
Stay a While…
Turn your visit into a magical retreat with on-site glamping at The Dreamery Hideaway (formerly Jollydays). Guests enjoy free access to the gardens, even after they close to the public — for twilight wanders and starlit dreams.
