Whether you're a history buff or an art lover, there's something extra for everyone, adding a special touch to our festival's spirit of exploration and community.

How do I take part? To get involved, please present a valid York Card, student card or identity card that proves York residency. If presenting an identity card, this must clearly state 'York' (e.g. driving licence or older person's bus pass).

York and District Organists’ Association

Ever wanted to play a church organ? Now’s your chance! The York & District Organists' Association invites visitors to drop by St Helen's Church, Stonegate (just opposite Betty’s Tearoom), for an incredible hands-on opportunity. Between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday 25th January, you can try playing the fine church organ - no experience necessary! This informal drop-in session is perfect for all ages and abilities.

Friends of York Cemetery

Discover the fascinating history of York Cemetery with a variety of activities on Sunday 26th January, from 10am to 2pm. The Friends of York Cemetery are opening the Chapel and Catacombs for visitors, offering guided Catacomb Tours, a Winter Garden Walk, a History Walk, and a People of Interest Walk, where you can learn about notable figures buried in the cemetery.

Inside the chapel, you’ll find stalls hosted by genealogists offering grave searches and organisations like the City of York & District Family History Society. Free refreshments will also be available at the Harriet Centre.

No booking is required for any of these activities - just head to York Cemetery, Cemetery Road, YO10 5AJ and explore!

Dive into the world of immersive digital environments with York Explore’s Introduction to AR/VR session. On Saturday 25th January, between 10:30am and 2:30pm, visitors can try Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) headsets. Drop in anytime for quick demos or join one of the 30-minute workshops at 11:15am or 1:15pm, where you’ll explore an app in more depth.

The workshops require completion of a short form, which can be done on the day. There’s no need to book ahead – just turn up and get ready for a futuristic experience! The session takes place in the Brierley Room at York Explore Library and Archive, Museum Street. For more information, visit york.gov.uk.
