York Ice Trail 2024 - City of Dreams

From 10am, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th February 2024. A Make It York event.

Dream big, and let your creativity run wild exploring magical, fictional, and spectacular masterpieces which turn York into ‘The City of Dreams’. Live carving, interactive experiences and the chance to win great prizes, it’s an extraordinary day out!

The ice sculptures have been generously sponsored by local businesses and can be admired at their locations listed here. Use the map to find your way around the city of dreams and complete the ice trail!

2. A Field of Dreams | Provided by Murton Park

Location: Parliament Street

There's nothing else our sculpture could be of - we love tractors!

Murton Park is home to The Yorkshire Museum of Farming and The Scardifield Tractor Collection, not to mention our ride-on tractors are a huge hit with our youngest visitors!

Murton Park has it all – a museum, animals, playground, railway and living history sites.

3. A Journey in Ice | Provided by Grand Central

Location: Parliament Street

Grand Central Rail showcases its brand through an exquisite ice sculpture titled "A Journey in Ice," featuring a cityscape from York to London with the iconic Grand Central train prominently displayed.

This design choice elevates our brand by showcasing landmarks in two of the UK's most popular cities, emphasizing our commitment to convenient transportation between these cultural hubs, reinforcing Grand Central's promise of a an effortless travel experience.

4. City of Trees | Provided by Dalby Forest

Location: Parliament Street

Dalby Forest, in the heart of the North York Moors National Park offers the perfect place to escape, relax and adventure. Home to over 8,500 acres of breath-taking views, endless walking, running and cycle trails and Gruffalo adventures, a great day out awaits at Dalby Forest.

Dalby Forest is home to an abundance of internationally important wildlife species and is also a designated Dark Sky Discovery Site, where you can experience the magic of seeing the Milky Way with the naked eye.

Location: Parliament Street

As we chase our dreams into 2024 the YorkMix Chasing Rainbows, Rainbow celebrates our local musical favourites, Shed 7 as they find themselves number one in the album chart.

We launched our radio station three years ago with a track by Shed 7 and as we chase our dreams alongside them we thought we'd climb for the sky with our amazing ice rainbow.

Plus our rainbow might make your dreams come true with £1000 to be won.

6. I'm late, I'm late! For a Very Important Date! | Provided by Ate O’Clock

Location: High Ousegate

"I'm late, I'm late! For a very important date!

Our restaurant is often described as "A wonderland like surprise upon entry” by guests, so a wonderland themed sculpture seemed the perfect fit and allowed us to include a clock, set to eight o'clock.

The clocks in Alice in wonderland are as famous as our very own "Ate O'Clock" clocks.

Location: Peter Lane

Described as an Aladdin's cave, we love to share our passion of everything that’s sewing related with all our wonderful customers.

We all dream of what we’re going to be sewing next, especially on one of our shiny, new sewing machines.

Location: Walmgate

York BID is proud to sponsor York Ice Trail, and this year we’re celebrating mythical creatures!

Keep an eye out for the Himalayan Yeti; a creature known for its looming height and deadly claws. Brave the terrifying Kraken with its giant tentacles while venturing through the city. Meet the nine-headed Hydra, take selfies with the majestic Unicorn, and marvel at the immortal Phoenix.

10. Belle of The Ball | Provided by York Castle Museum

Location: Eye of York

Immerse yourself in over 400 year's of York's Past.

Pantomime dame walkdown outfit designed for and worn by Berwick Kaler for 'The Grand Old Dame of York' in the pantomime season 2018-19. The design is fun, quirky and represents a part of York's recent history.

We are a museum about York's social history. We are famous for our Victorian street but we also have collections which go right up to the modern day.

11. Ice Brolly Walks | Provided by The Coppergate Centre

Location: The Coppergate Centre

The only shopping centre within York's city walls, and home of the Brollywalk from May to September.

The Coppergate Brollywalk has become iconic for local residents and visitors alike, with displays that change every month - the only suspended umbrella display in the world that can boast this!

From rainbow brollies to celebrate Pride to skeleton umbrellas for Hallowe'en, this make Coppergate Walk one of York's most Instagrammable streets!

The Slithering Serpent

The Serpents provides Venom for one of our most magical potions and Wizards can try it during the Ice Trail.

The Serpent is one of the Mythical creatures featured in our World famous potions served on Shambles in York.

15. Oompa Loompas | Provided by York's Chocolate Story

Location: Middletons

York's Chocolate Story offers an exciting and educational guided tour through the fascinating history of chocolate, revealing tales of renowned chocolate-making families and their finest creations.

Our ice sculpture is three Oompa Loompas and pays homage to our profound love for chocolate!

Cleverly crafted faces allow children to become the face of the Oompa Loompas. The sculpture reflects our commitment to creating an exceptional chocolate tour experience, mirroring the joy of working with chocolate.

City Cruises York delights passengers with a whimsical addition the Ice Trail: a Willy Wonka sculpture.

This playful and enchanting feature embodies the company's commitment to creating memorable and enjoyable experiences, fostering a sense of joy and wonder that resonates with visitors.

17. The Golden Ticket | Provided by Middletons

Location: Middletons

Middletons Hotel – part of Daniel Thwaites – is set to unveil ‘The Golden Ticket’, a spectacular ice sculpture which provides a nod to the heritage of the hotel’s Sir Joseph Terry Alms Cottages.

Filled with Terry’s Chocolate Oranges, visitors throughout the weekend will be invited to guess how many are featured within the ice sculpture, to be in with a chance of winning a golden ticket for a complimentary one night B&B stay at the hotel.

26. The Big Bad Wolf | Provided by York Minster

Location: Minster Piazza

York Minster is one of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals. For 1,000 years or more, the cathedral’s awe-inspiring spaces have resounded with spectacular music.

This year, York Minster’s sculpture features the ‘big bad wolf’ inspired by a special performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s classic Peter and the Wolf which will be taking place inside the cathedral on Tuesday 13 February.

Prokofiev’s familiar and accessible composition is the perfect introduction to classical music for children and families.

27. Train Of Dreams | Provided by National Railway Museum

Location: High Petergate

The National Railway Museum is one of York's most beloved visitor attractions, home to some of the legends of the rails including Mallard, the Japanese bullet train and for a limited time, Flying Scotsman.

A fantastic day out for families, with our new space, Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery with hands on experience and amazing live science shows.

31. RMS Queen Mary | Provided by Bettys

Location: Davygate

An icon of grandeur and grace, the RMS Queen Mary certainly made an impression upon Bettys founder Frederick Belmont, who sailed on the ship’s maiden voyage in 1936.

Frederick was so inspired that he modelled his new York café after the ship’s Art Deco luxury, even engaging the same craftspeople for its fittings.

The Queen Mary’s style lives on to this day in Bettys Belmont Room, home to the most elegant afternoon teas, while delicious food and drink and a warm Yorkshire welcome make Bettys an essential stopping port whenever you’re in York.
