Central but hidden, we opened our doors in 2014 committed to injecting some theatre, flair, character and bloody-good local food and drink to one of the less-trodden streets in York. The goal is to provide our guests with a safe haven from the stresses of daily life, and a one-of-a-kind, end-to-end dining experience. The Whippet Inn understands that visitors to York are in the city 7 days a week, with that in mind we remain one of the few independent restaurants that is also open Monday and Tuesday evenings.

We’ve become synonymous with superb steak, offering our guests a fantastic variety of ever-changing cuts & breeds, but we are equally obsessed about our other seasonally inspired plates, focusing on locally caught fish and unique vegetarian & vegan dishes. All this set against the backdrop of quirky, cool décor. We have taken the time to create a unique feel, with nooks and crannies packed with unexpected fun. Front Dining Room - Dog friendly! With a name like The Whippet Inn, how could we not welcome our four legged friends? As long as they are accompanied by a well behaved adult. Please let us know when booking that you require a dog friendly table as this section does fill up quickly. This area is also available for private hire for 16 guests (seated)

Our Private Dining Room AKA The Padded Cell - The infamous padded cell offers a more intimate dining experience for smaller groups, ideal for any celebration. This one’s a great option for boardroom meetings and small presentations as well — with fast Wi-Fi, AV equipment and Day Delegate Packages available upon request.

Adults Only: From the suggestions of our friends and family we’ve tried to create something a little different to what’s on offer by the high street chains. I’m sure that we will upset some people with our choice but when that rare day comes when you can get a little ‘me time’, we hope we might be forgiven.
