With the largest collection of Independent traders in York it’s fair to say The Shambles Market is a treasure trove packed full of indie York shopping experiences.

The Shambles Market is located in one of the city’s most historic locations, next to the famous cobbled street the Shambles, one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Europe.

With a mix of traders showcasing their goods, there really is something for everyone. A one-stop shop where you can tick off those essentials on your shopping list, then find some me time and treat yourself to some retail therapy.

As you wander around the market your senses will be teased as you smell local fresh produce, you’ll be wowed by the hand-crafted jewellery and be taken back in time with the vintage clothes and gifts on sale.

Fashionistas, meet Copper and White

If fashion is your thing, then head along to Copper and White. Their collection is inspired by the modern woman who desires something new and contemporary, something stylish and luxurious. Their range offers relaxed glamour with a relaxed price tag. Their clothing is carefully chosen and creates looks that are perfect for easy, every day style.

Clare of Copper and White, told us why she is so fond of the market:

“The market is special because it’s a small community where we all work together to help and support each other. There’s always a buzz and vibrancy to it. We get a diverse range of customers from all over the UK and the world, so it’s lovely to talk to them. I speak a few foreign languages so I get a chance to practise which is fun. I love the range of artisan products that are available, and the daily smells of foods cooking are mouth-watering. We often hear the sounds of musicians singing or we can hear street entertainers in then square nearby, which add to the whole buzz of the market.”

For beautifully crafted jewellery, meet Splatt and Kchoom

If you’re looking for some truly unique jewellery, then pop down to the stall shared by Splatt and Kchoom. Splatt sell quirky and rock-inspired alternative jewellery, that includes a vast selection of rings, bracelets, pendants, earrings and all manner of body piercings. Kchoom offer a beautifully crafted solid 925 sterling silver jewellery collection. Stylish and skilful combinations await, with rings in a wide range of unusual styles and a wonderfully eclectic choice of pendants and earrings and much more.

We asked Splatt and Kchoom why they love York and what they think the market offers:

“York has always felt like our spiritual home, and it feels wonderful to be in such a marvellous and unique cosmopolitan city. We can't think of anywhere else that we'd rather be. The market is special because of the addictively diverse and ever-changing array of unique traders and one-off micro businesses, enthusiastically supported by locals and visitors to the city. There’s a perfect blend of innovative and traditional approaches to quality products and presentation, building on its proud heritage and promising great things for the future. And right now, post lockdown, York Shambles Market sits at the heart of the ideal destination for a safe and rewarding trip out for York's residents and those from further afield.”

World street food to refuel those shopped out legs

With so much to discover in the Shambles Market you will need to take some time out to refuel. The great news is The Shambles Food Court will take you on a flavoursome international street food journey around the world, all while keeping your feet firmly in York. The Shambles Kitchen is home to burrito smokehouse snacks, Los Moros bring a taste of modern North African flavours and French artisan creperie Krep cook up sweet crepes and galettes packed with savoury goodness.

Changes to the market experience

Whether you're a newbie or regular visitor to the market, it’s worth knowing that some changes have been made: measures have been put in place to allow you and others to safely enjoy the delights of The Shambles Market. Please do stop by and say ‘ey up’ to our friendly traders and support them in these difficult times. Not only will you be supporting local businesses, you’ll also be rewarded with a uniquely local shopping experience.
